Wellies
Wellies

Wellington boots, Wellies, evolved from the change in fashion to wearing long trousers; a boot was required to be practical, comfortable footwear suitable for wearing with trousers.  The Duke of Wellington requested that such boots be made for his troops and the leather Wellie Boot was born.  The Hunter Wellie Boot is the one originated from the Duke of Wellington and as the public took to emulating their war hero, his Wellie Boot was soon being worn across the kingdom.  Keeping in line with technology these boots developed into rubber boots.  This process was brought about separately by two Americans, one of whom became what is today known as Hunter, the other as Aigle.  The Hunter Wellie Boot saw dramatic boost in production during the First and Second World Wars as orders were placed for a sturdy boot suitable for the conditions in flooded trenches.  With the hardships following the war, Hunter Wellie Boots became popular as women’s, children’s and labourers’s waterproof footwear due to their growing reputation for performance, durability and outstanding comfort.  The now well known Green Hunter and Royal Hunter Wellie’s were launched in the 1950s.
Established in France in 1853, AIGLE stands for uncompromising quality combined with superb design and craftmanship.  All AIGLE rubber footwear products are still handcrafted in Europe , using the best natural rubber available and over a century of experience in the vulcanisation of rubber.  Soon the Aigle brand grew to become international and to incorporate leisure footwear made using fabric and rubber and waterproof clothing launching watersports footwear.  The Aigle range expanded into Outdoor clothing especially for watersport and became a supplier to the America ’s Cup in the 1990s.  In 2003 Aigle celebrated its 150th birthday.
Le Chameau Chasseur waterproof boots were created by a French hunter in the 1920s who wanted boots in natural crepe appreciated for their comfort, watertightness and suppleness.  His company grew from manufacturing in France to incorporate a factory in Marocco.  Le Chameau boots are still hand made, each bootmaker learns the secret of manufacture from the master bootmakers during 9 months of training to produce quality waterproof, comfortable and durable boots
