Alan Paine Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection
Alan Paine is one of several new brands that we are welcoming to The Country Catalogue this season. This British company has built a reputation for classic, quality country clothing and the new collection does not disappoint.
The Heritage of Alan Paine
When Alan Paine was born in 1907, his father was struggling to set up a tailoring business in Godalming, Surrey. The business began by producing the first cable stitch pattern, used to produce sweaters for sports men and women. In the 1920s, club colour trims were added to plain sweaters and they were worn by many rowing, tennis and cricket clubs. The cable knit design grew in popularity and soon became a favourite of the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward III.
After the war, Alan Paine took over the business from his father William and it was renamed 'Alan Paine'. The business grew rapidly in Britain and overseas, particularly in Europe and the United States. The focus moved to developing the European market in the 1970s, when the two sons of Alan Paine joined the business.
In the early 1990s, the Paine family sold the business by the Alan Paine name and traditional values still remain at the heart of the company today. Alan Paine is now based in the British countryside and continues to use British design skills.
More recently, the Alan Paine brand has expanded beyond just classic knit wear to include an English Lifestyle range and a Country Collection. The product range now includes classic and contemporary jackets, coats, waistcoats, shirts, breeks, trousers and accessories for men, women and children.
