Wellingtons
Wellington
boots evolved from the change in fashion to wearing long trousers; a boot was required to be practical, comfortable footwear suitable for wearing with trousers. The Duke of Wellington requested that such boots be made for his troops and the leather Wellington Boot was born. The Hunter Wellington Boot is the one originated from the Duke of Wellington and as the public took to emulating their war hero, his Wellington Boot was soon being worn across the kingdom. Keeping in line with technology these boots developed into rubber boots. This process was brought about separately by two Americans, one of whom became what is today known as Hunter, the other as Aigle. The Hunter Wellington Boot saw dramatic boost in production during the First and Second World Wars as orders were placed for a sturdy boot suitable for the conditions in flooded trenches. With the hardships following the war, Hunter Wellington Boots became popular as women’s, children’s and labourers’s waterproof footwear due to their growing reputation for performance, durability and outstanding comfort. The now well known Green Hunter and Royal Hunter wellington’s were launched in the 1950s.
