The modified 18th century boot first made its first appearance in 1817. Following a request by the Duke of Wellington, these Wellington Boots were designed as practical, comfortable footwear suitable for wearing with trousers as apposed to knee breeches and caught on with patriotic British gentlemen eager to emulate their war hero.
All these sturdy boots were made of leather, however following the move of an American entrepreneur to Scotland , Hunter boots were manufactured in rubber and the company soon grew to produce other rubber products as well as our beloved Wellie Boot.
The advent of World War I dramatically boosted the production of the Hunter Wellington Boot, a sturdy boot suitable for the conditions in flooded trenches.  This fashionable waterproof boot was now a functional necessity, playing an important role which was also required during the World War II.
With the hardships following the war, Hunter Wellington Boots became popular as women’s, children’s and labourers’s waterproof footwear due to their growing reputation of the for performance, durability and outstanding comfort.  The now well known Green Hunter and Royal Hunter wellington’s were launched in the 1950s.
Following several buy outs and name changes, in 2006 the company began trading as Hunter Boot Limited.
During its 50 year lifespan, the Hunter wellington has undergone a major revolution. From being a solely practical item, Hunter Wellie Boots has now become fashionably acceptable.
